Established in 1986 by Heritage Restoration Consultant, Barbara Wilding and award winning architect, Phyllis Murphy, Paperhangings has a long history of participation in the restoration of Australia's National Trust listed properties. The company specilaises in the identification and dating of historic wallpapers and provides consultative advice for the design and decoration of historic period decorative schemes. Through its involvement in heritage restoration the company has had the opportunity to collect numerous wallpaper remants discovered in noteable public and private historic buildings. Each remnant has been identified and dated to form the Paperhangings Historic Wallpaper Archive, an important historical reference of our Australian Design Heritage. For use in authentic restoration projects and decorative bespoke interiors, each design in the collection is faithfully recreated according to the original and reproduced by hand.
These wallpapers assist in the creation of mood and atmosphere in historic buildings. Used harmoniously with fine fabrics and furniture it does transform the interior into an imaginative, artistic environment.
Today, Barbara's daughter, Maree Wilding is the Managing Director of the company. Having learnt all aspects of the business from its founders, she oversees design, client liason and project management. Maree draws inspiration from 30 years exposure to the family business and her own appreciation for design, architecture, art and craft. Her experience has resulted in a knowledge base that enables her to recreate authentic historic interiors or to create contemporary interiors influenced by a classic aesthetic. This enables a fresh approach of traditional appreciation to contemporary design. She is particularly sought after to update heritage schemes to make them fresh and relevant to today's style of living as this unique background allows understanding the importance of remaining sympathetic to the style and integrity of historic buildings. Maree actively works as a consultant on interior decorative schemes to marry the spirit of the past to the sensibilities of the present.
